Catherine studied Architectural Stained glass at the Royal College of Art in the late 60’s I set up a stained glass studio in Mid Wales through the 70’s and 80’s.
She moved to Whitstable in the early 90’s offering her the opportunity for a new beginning by building a studio at the end of her garden near the sea and started painting.
The act of painting offers me the freedom to be spontaneous, to explore colour and rhythm in mark-making. There is often an underlying element of order within the spontaneity – (control vs chaos)
Sometimes I respond to a song. Greek myths or poetry sometimes suggest a subject. Travelling, sea swimming, my garden and allotment are all a source of inspiration.
“ We can perceive rhythm with three senses at once. First we can hear it. Secondly see it. Thirdly feel it in our muscles. This is what gives it such power”. Paul Klee
